Unique Literary Style
John’s literary style is also unique. It is characterized by simplicity, with short sentences connected by coordinate conjunctions (“and”). The style is repetitious, with parallelism used for emphasis (e.g., John 14:27: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you.”). There are also many contrasts: light and darkness, truth and falsehood, life and death, above and below. While John’s vocabulary is basic, seemingly “simple” words like know, abide, believe, witness, truth, life, light, glory, and the world carry profound theological significance.
